Back to the Basics
Lately the Lord has been having me on pride. Why? Because pride is a sin that infects the world including those in the church and it can be very subtle if we are not careful. One way that pride sneaks in is through knowledge. In our world today we have access to knowledge at our fingertips. However, the Word of God cautions us about knowledge.
1 Corinthians 8:1-3 says:
Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him.
Having knowledge is not a bad thing. If we go to God’s word we will see that the wise seeks knowledge (Pro 18:15), we should choose knowledge rather than choice gold (Pro 8:10), the one whose heart has understanding seeks knowledge (Pro 15:14), and the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Pro 1:7).
The place where we go wrong is when that knowledge makes us think we “know something” and therefore we are important and begin to think more highly of ourselves that we ought to think.
How should we use our knowledge?
The knowledge that we gain should lead us to love. That is simple truth that is hard to understand and live out by many. What we know should not lead us to pride and raising ourselves up on a pedestal to be better than others. Instead, the knowledge that we acquire should lead us closer to Christ, humility, and loving Him with all our heart, soul, and mind which in turn spills over to loving and serving others. If what we know does not lead us to walk in love, then quite frankly we don’t really know anything.
So where do we go from here? Know that our God desires to see us grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. However, be careful not be puffed up in your knowledge and walk in pride by doing these three things:
Let’s get back to the basics. Be blessed!
